Interesting, I've always thought of Shakespeare as a crypto-Catholic, and of Hamlet as a Catholic work.

That is nonetheless a valid interpretation, which I too considered in my research for this essay. While I personally do not subscribe to the theory that he was a crypto-catholic (I think he was an Anglican who was sympathetic towards catholic theology, similar to Anglo-Catholics such as myself), I nonetheless view ”Hamlet” as not so much of a declaration of faith on behalf of Will Shakespeare, but rather an overall analysis of the Reformation and why it was so appealing to Northern Europeans, particularly the Anglo-Saxon peoples.
