Well written article. I learned a few things. The history of Florida is unique and largely unknown by most people, even those of us who live here (fellow Tampa Floridian here). It would be great to see more articles on our history, including the British period during the American Revolution.
Fantastic bit of history, in brief! I've been aware of the short-lived French Jacksonville colony for some time now but had not known of the Huegenot nature of the different settler groups.
I'm a 4th generation Miamian and also the last, along with my two siblings. We've been gone now for what will be 20 years next year, and I almost hate to say that I don't miss miss it, but I truly don't. The sudden and extreme demographic shift saw to it, ultimately. Though, now half of us are on the SW Florida Gulf Coast. It's still a fantastic place to be, but the ever-creeping demographic changes are showing more drastically each year. I guess in the end, the Spanish will have seen through the displacement of us all...
There needs to, needs to be a way for substack to let you have footnotes that allow you to jump down to the note, like in wikipedia. Tired of scrolling up and down!
Thank you for posting, gentlemen!
