The liberal elements of the Catholic Church take particular issue with 'American-style' traditionalism as well, which they see as dangerously conservative (ie. the whole Taylor Marshall sphere).

If anyone could point me towards an explanation of why parts of the American Catholic tradition have remained fairly orthodox even as the broader Church becomes more progressive, I'd be very curious. Perhaps its due to the broader cultural climate that they're embedded within? Marshall is in Texas, while liberal icons like Fr. James Martin are in NY.

A common reply would be "Lex orandi, lex credendi". The law of prayer is the law of belief. Or, as you pray, so you believe.

They needed to change the liturgy to get people to adopt the new beliefs, those who didn't go along with the new liturgy also stuck with the old beliefs.

It's also noted that those protestant denominations who are best at resisting progressivism also have more traditional type liturgies, such as the high church anglicans, and (i assume) the LCMS.

I wouldn't count out Eastern Europe quite yet, though we may end up moving in a direction that is not quite Western.
