I also rewatched this movie and was struck by how based it actually is. Tristan embodies the natural law, honor bound, "bronze age" American spirit. Great analysis. Also thought Tristan's turn towards bootleggers was also fitting of the all American archetype.

Great film. Zwick has a thing for depicting the destruction modern war and ideas visit on traditional societies both overtly (The Last Samurai) and a bit subversively (Glory).

Without even realizing it was a Zwick film I watched Blood Diamond yesterday, think that’s another good example in the same vein

One of the greatest films ever. The novella itself is so sparse it's more like reading notes than a story.

Agreed. I was disappointed by it. One of the rare cases of the movie outperforming the book.
