I think many New Yorkers have their tastebuds messed up from the unique pollution infused into all the food there so when they go elsewhere nothing tastes right and they have to assert that the food in NYC is actually superior even if the particular restaurant is in reality guttertrash. None of them seem to like anything made in South Florida despite most the restaurants catering to them to a degree.
The south just has the best food in general. There are some regional treats best found where they came from, but I never ate as well as I did in the south. And hipster food is lukewarm garbage east coast or west, whether they're trying to be "authentic" or "subversive".
Hey Pete, great read. In WI good BBQ is next to non-existent to say the least. On a vacation last year we stopped at a couple BBQ joints in LA and Mississippi. The south does do it right. Back to WI, I have had to go through a significant learning curve in making my own, but at least I now know what good BBQ tastes like. Thankfully now having the South as a reference point. I am pleased to say that with some time invested and some work, one can make excellent BBQ at home. It’s cheaper, more rewarding, and a great way to connect with like-minded folks.
I had to learn to make clam chowder after moving out of NH. Almost every place I go to in Florida has absolutely revolting Chowder that isn't even remotely correct. There is variance in New England and terrible Tourist trap "Milk with some clams in it" but the stuff I was getting down here is full of chicken stock, bell peppers and other crap that absolutely does not belong.
NYC does a lot of food very well but BBQ is not one of them. I was there once on a packed subway leaving Time’s square and overheard two men having a conversation about their favorite BBQ. Both of them agreed that the best they’ve had was from the Commissary in Germantown TN

But have you tried the wholesome chungus Seattle bodega pho?
BBQ sauce ruins anything it touches. It even ruins the bottle it came in.
They've had Dinosaur Barbecue in New York state for a while and it tastes like something good to eat.
